Some pool owners mistakenly think that if they are not using their pool this time of year, it does not need to be maintained. Neglecting regular maintenance during the winter can lead to damage that will not be discovered before the costs of repair can skyrocket. Regular sweeping and vacuuming will prevent staining of the plaster. Regularly checking the pool chemical levels and pump operation will save money on restorative treatments and repairs when the long, hot Arizona days roll back in. A reputable pool cleaning service can help keep your pool in sparkling clean condition.

Now is the time to consider winterizing your home with a pest control treatment. At the peak of the cold season, bugs in Arizona do not move around as much. Winterizing your foundation with treatments now will protect your home as the weather warms up and bugs start looking for new nooks and crannies to breed in. Professional pest control companies offer winterization treatments on either one-time or on-going basis.

Most homeowners are familiar with the idea of “spring cleaning.” But, far more people are likely to want their home clean before guests and family visit for the holidays. If you are short on time, consider hiring a house cleaning service. Most maid services offer a single deep-clean appointment that will help get you caught up on the work that you have put off since last spring!

Though other regions of the south and southeastern United States are harvesting grapefruit, here in Arizona the grapefruit are best in late spring or early summer. Let the fruit stay on the tree, and be prepared to protect them from frost if necessary. Your patience will be rewarded with sweeter, juicier citrus later on.

It is important not to overwater your plants as the weather cools off. If you have not reset your automatic water system for the shorter days, now is the time to check. Set shorter durations and do not water at night. Over watering can cause root rot and other forms of fungal damage to plants. Winter rye grass is usually planted in October. A general rule is that when the temperatures at night are consistently around the 60°F range, you are ready to plant.

Pest control problems change month to month and season to season. Most pests will not disappear without treatment, so do not ignore them. Contact a local pest control or gardening expert to find out what pests are in prime season and how to control their numbers.
August 2008
Rye grass will start to die in early August when our temperatures get to around 100°F. Stop watering the grass for a couple of weeks to let it die out, and then begin watering again to awaken your dormant Bermuda summer grass.
July 2008
Change your air filters frequently during the monsoon season. Strong thunderstorms during this time often produce blowing dust and flying debri. Make sure that all doors and windows are sealed completely by checking for any tears or seal defects.
June 2008
Use soap and a medium scrubbing pad to clean the tile border around your swimming pool. For those tough stains and high calcium areas, use one part muratic acid and 5 parts soap. Never use razor blades or scouring pads as it may scratch the pool tile.
May 2008
Add an outdoor kitchen or gas barbeque to your home, and enjoy meals on the patio in the cool evenings of Arizona. A licensed gas piping contractor can ensure that your addition is safe, functional, and beautiful.
